Surprise Yarn Balls!

What's inside is still a surprise! One of them tinkles like one of those vintage baby toys when you shake it! My oh-so-fab knitting trio exchanged these balls (I didn't make one of mine to keep, so mine isn't pictured). We made each ball long enough to complete a scarf, and the scarf will be a surprise in the making, with different yarns as you get deeper into the ball... and a treasure when you get to the center! It makes me want to drop everything and knit away...but then again, I really do enjoy admiring them just as they are, and imagining the possibilites...

This is such a fun idea. I don't knit but one of my dearest friends does. This would be an excellent gift for her.
How do I know what kind and how much yarn to use?

Thanks for sharing!
